The first threat Patrick Smith, 30, of New Canaan gave his ex-girlfriend was that if she didn't give him money she owed him, she said, and it escalated from there, according to police. He also said he would slash her mother's tires, that he would set the girlfriend's house on fire and that he would beat up her brother, according to the police report.
