06/21/10 MEDIA ALERT: Rick Torres Press Release On Ballot Qualification

For Immediate Release

Torres for Congress: 203-923-1321

June 21, 2010

RICK TORRES' STATEMENT ON BALLOT QUALIFICATION

Rick Torres, who is running for the Republican nomination in Connecticut's 4th District, the seat currently held by Jim Himes, has issued the following statement on the Secretary of State's announcement regarding ballot qualifiers today. Torres is excited to have his ideas aired alongside those of fellow Republicans Robert Merkle and Dan Dibecella.

"This is going to be an exciting race and, I believe, a definitive race for the nation. The voters of Connecticut's Fourth have clear choices between a candidate who has as his base, the Republican establishment and a candidate who has the support of some of the louder voices in the Tea Party movement. In me they have a third choice: a candidate who derives his support from regular folks across the District who just simply want to be left alone to raise their families and run their businesses."

"I have struggled and fought from the time that my family fled Cuba and have risen from the oppression of the public housing system to have my name on a ballot for United States Congress. It is really quite an honor and I am happy that the voters had the faith in me to sign my nomination papers"

"It is an interesting year to be in a race. So many want to hold on to their power and others are just swinging wildly because they are angry. We need a reasoned dialogue with the people because it is their lives and their freedoms that are at stake here. Insiders must put aside their allegiances and some in the debate must tone down their anger. We need to come up with real solutions to restore our nation to her place as a shining light for democracy around the globe."

Torres, who was born in Bridgeport, moved back to his family's native Cuba when he was a young boy. It took his father five years after Fidel Castro came to power to secure permission to return to America's shores. In 1967, Rick and his brother were brought back to Bridgeport—with not much more than the clothes on their backs. The family lived across from the PT Barnum Public Housing Project and Torres worked his way through college in a series of construction trades jobs. He eventually studied for a PhD in microbiology but, like many folks, had to quit graduate school in order to support his young family.

Torres and Michelle, his wife of 27 years, started a series of small businesses, working double shifts for years. Eventually, they bought Harborview Market: a once thriving neighborhood store which had fallen on desperate times. Harborview is once again a successful business and was the site of today's press conference.

In 2003, Rick ran for Mayor of Bridgeport on the Republican Ticket. Prior to his Mayoral run, Rick took an active role in a number of neighborhood and community organizations, and ran for several local government offices. Rick and Michele have five children: John, Alex, Michael, Kaitlyn, and Gabbi. They live in Bridgeport.

06/15/10 Dan Debicella: Greenwich Resident And Forth District Congressman Jim Himes Soft On Supporting Israel

Dear friends,

Recent reporting in the Jewish Ledger on June 9th indicates just how unwilling Jim Himes is to take a strong position in support of Israel. The full story can be found at www.jewishledger.com.

It is clear that we need a Congressman who is unequivocal in his support for Israel. Jim Himes says he supports Israel, but then is unwilling to take a strong stand to support our ally when they are most in need. The United States needs to support Israel as they work to secure their borders and stop weapons from reaching terrorist groups like Hamas. Fairfield County deserves a Congressman who will speak strongly and clearly for our allies in Israel.

These are the contrasting statements reported in the Jewish Ledger:

REP. JIM HIMES (D)

“Israel is our good friend and our only long term ally in a dangerous part of the world. As Americans we do not rush to judgment before we have the facts. As tragic as the situation in the Mediterranean is, I urge all parties involved to do all they can to reduce tension and to allow the facts to be examined.”

DAN DEBICELLA (R)

"The United States needs to back Israel as it tries to secure its borders against terrorist groups like Hamas. They have a right to stop ships to ensure no weapons are being moved into the Gaza Strip. Israel is trying to reach out to moderate Palestinians to reach a lasting peace, yet the extremists in Hamas continue to try and pick a fight with Israel. I firmly believe the U.S. should stand with our allies in Israel and promote the removal of terrorist organizations like Hamas from power."

I will continue to advocate for the Israeli people and for their right to defend themselves from extremism. You can help me today by making a contribution of $25, $50, or $100 or by volunteering with the campaign. Together we can defeat Jim Himes and restore common sense to Washington.

All my best,

-Dan

PRESS RELEASE: Star Parker Endorses Republican Congressional Candidate Rick Torres

I am thrilled today to announce that Star Parker has endorsed my candidacy for US Congress.

Star Parker is a nationally recognized Conservative leader, political commentator, and author.
Photobucket
Star and I have a shared background and a common message. We both suffered under the welfare state and with hard work and some luck both of us were able to join the free and prosperous economy that most Americans take for granted. Like me, Star understands that capitalism creates wealth and that government destroys wealth. Wealth grows the economy and creates jobs, a concept lost on Jim Himes and Nancy Pelosi.

I am running for Congress to demonstrate that authentic American conservatism is the truest form of 'social-justice.' For too long my native Bridgeport has been held in bondage to the socialist experiments of the Democratic Party. As a Congressman I will work to end schemes of wealth redistribution and liberate my city of Bridgeport from the clutches of the Democratic Machine. With Star Parker's endorsement I am all the more confident that I will beat Jim Himes and that I will have a chance to serve the people of Connecticut.

We have made a lot of progress in a short period of time, but I still need your help to restore the first principles of this exceptional nation.

Help me restore the first principles of America with your generous contribution of $25, $50, or even $100.

Rick Torres

Republicans have failed miserably to engage themselves in this argument (that the Republican party is for the rich and the Democratic party is for the poor). My allegiance is to get the poor back on their feet and to enjoy this country that so many of us take for granted.

It worries me that whenever there’s a new government program or agency, that much more of our freedom is swallowed up! He (President Obama) to add another 9 to 15% with cap and trade and health care. That’s on the verge of converting this free society to a socialist society that no longer worries about the free market.

One of the things in my background you should understand is that my family is in Cuba. That’s why I say that we are on verge of knocking on socialism.

All of those plans (health care, unemployment benefits, jobs) are socialist plan in nature. Socialism is when the government tries to do for us what we should do for ourselves. What I’ll tell you is that statement is based on fact and our government is out of control.

So we need to get government out of lives. I live in the people. I believe in “you”. A health care bill is an effort for the government to provide us with health care. That should be in the people’s hands, not the government’s hands.

I content that anytime the government “creates jobs” that it will have destroyed others in the process.

Rick Torres is a life-long Bridgeport resident, a successful small-business owner, and a true leader and steward of public good in his neighborhood, community, and city.

He prides himself in being a Constitutional scholar, and is running to be the kind of a citizen legislator envisioned by our Founders.

Rick was born in Bridgeport in 1959. His father, Juan, a Cuban immigrant and a political activist whose radio program had been shut down by the Batista regime, welcome the Cuban Revolution. In 1961, Juan took his family back to Cuba, to help Castro lead his native land out of tyranny—or so he thought. It took Juan only a couple of months to become disillusioned with the communist dictator, and another 5 years to secure a permission to leave Cuba again. Thus, in 1967, Rick and his brother were brought back to Bridgeport—with not much more than the clothes on their backs.

Today a successful self-made businessman and perhaps the most respected Republican in Bridgeport. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2003. He served as a city Republican Town Committee chairman before being forced out after endorsing Democratic state Rep. Christopher L. Caruso in the 2007.
